If asking my direct manager a simple question and he does not reply, does that equal bad news?

If you think you have a few more MONTHS on your contract and you're seeking verification of that, then the DM has probably put this at the bottom of the priority list when it comes to needed an immediate answer. You shouldn't read any unnecessary negativity into the lack of response. In project management, I'm sure there are questions and needs that arise in your DM's day that require immediate attention. Probably when he has time to sit down and double check the date for you, he'll respond. Be patient.
