In the book "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller, What exactly IS the "little rubber pipe"?

It is a noose, what the protagonist contemplates hanging himself with. I think Biff steals it and makes reference to the fact that his father can't commit suicide without his little rubber pipe.
