NYC rent prices/salaries compared to LA?

I plan on moving to NYC this summer or fall. I am a college graduate (probably going back to get my Master's next year) and I've had a lot of work experience as an exec. assistant in different corporations. I'm trying to get a good understanding of the cost of living vs. salary in NYC compared to LA. Here in LA, I make a little over 40k, and rent is generally $600-$800 for a private room when you have roommates in a shared apartment, or $800-$1200 for your own studio or one-bedroom. I know NYC rents can be a tad more depending on location/amenities, but does the salary range make up for this at all?
